bastille day

last year at this time, on this day, jane arrives in paris, without me. i am still in rwanda at that moment - and we chat whilst i sip french press coffee on the terrace overlooking kigali. she arrives safe and tells me that yes, all of my quirky hotel requests for our french love nest have been met. i plan to join her the following day after traipsing through nairobi, bruxelles, and finally onto the capital.

jane enjoys that day in the most carefree way ... drinking wine, sipping coffee, eating cheese, exploring on foot, chatting to strangers ... a small slice of heaven for her, and a treat to be alone for a few hours while traveling. by the time i arrive in france some twenty-four hours later, she is settled in and super relaxed, asking me to call in my breakfast order from the metro as i near the hotel so she can have it waiting for me in the room.

simpler times, for certain. in fact, we have dinner with our parisien friends, david-alexandre and aurelie, who we met originally in india. over dinner at (how clichéd) a charming french bistro (the real deal), we end up talking about the proliferation of cancers amongst young people - our peers. it seems to be as common to that side of the atlantic as it is to our own left bank. we certainly could not have projected that jane would include herself in this group just a few months later.

the incredible amount of support we receive from these friends, as well as all of our other friends scattered across the globe, is amazing and inspiring. having met people throughout our travels, as well as during the period we lived in the city, we are able to share our lives with those residing in far-flung countries. made particularly more efficient these days with texting, skype-ing, video chatting, and email.

so we think back fondly to last year's bastille day and allow that happy memory to further sustain us and make us realize that yes, we have truly taken advantage and relished all those good moments - and plan to continue to do so for a long, long time!!!

lady of leisure

i am quite convinced that if jane were home full time, we'd both be in the loony bin!

omg! yackety, yack, yack. the phone ringing all day. she: upstairs chatting, laughing vigorously (not that there's anything wrong with that!), comparing 'scrips with joan, comparing marrakech with debbie from bruxelles, entertaining callers in person - a real lunching lady! of course, one day does not a bon-bon eating socialite make (but a damn good impression if i've ever seen one).

left side is sore. resting in bed watching netflix. putting feet up. AND THAT WAS JUST ME! you should see her!

alas, a new start, body back in form, healing and moving forward. although jane will be the first to tell you that i pushed her towards this surgery despite her reluctance to do it now, i'm 100% convinced it's for the best ... the quicker she is 'healed' - at least physically - the more she'll be in a position to get beyond this. if there is such a thing as getting beyond it.

i don't mind being the fall guy, that's okay ... and sometimes, just sometimes, your spouse can see what's best for you (who would ever actually admit to that though???). by week's end jane should be back in rare form, and before you know it we'll escape the cool april weather and we'll be enjoying miami, courtesy of maria and daniel's generous offer. it will be great to chill out, be away from our own environment, and feel the sun's warm rays.

tomorrow's another day ...

50 is the new 40

today, jane takes stays in - no work, just recuperating! i'm actually amazed, simply amazed, that she's heeded my advice and listened to her own body - she knows that post-chemo tuesdays are rough for her, and she wisely decides to conserve her energy - bravo!

she does sit, lie, and relax - incredible! and after all that, she IS feeling okay - a bit sore here and there, but good nonetheless. some doctor's appointments beckon, and we go together, even stopping at h&m for a little shopping - flirty dresses, flouncy tops, hip hugging jeans - and although her heart's not in it, she does get a boost from it. we return home, a sunny afternoon, and jane takes it easy. busy preparing dinner, talking to debbie in bruxelles, baking a cake, and we decide on an impromptu and quick, light dinner in honor of rochelle's impending birthday (she'll be away on the big day, so there's no time like the present).

how nice to celebrate these milestones. after all, getting old positively sucks, but NOT getting old is even worse. and we're not quite at the walker & depends stage yet, so yah, we'll take all those candles and happily extinguish them while looking forward to another year. we know too many people who have had their share, so it's our time to take a little back!!!

as i wait for my own cardiology appointment today (routine) i tell jane: "see, you've already had your big thing, your cancer ... think of all the rest of us, just waiting for the other shoe to drop! see how much you're ahead of the game!".

she just rolls her eyes (routine).
